Peter Goldsbury: WHAT DOES THE DESIGNATION SHIHAN MEAN?
Translation of the article published in British Aikido Federation - Newsletter No. 33, 1999.The author, IAF President outlines his explanation of the concepts Shihan, Shidoin and Fukushidoin formerly published in Aikido Today Magazine (sU.S.). This part brings a brief common overview of assuming Japanese words into foreign languages and analyses the concept of Shihan. To be continued.

Daniel Chvála: THE EMOTION OF FEAR
The article deals with the meaning of emotions in human life, their physiological foundation, mechanism and rate of motion. Special attention is given to fear, causes of its inception and external manifestation. Self-control training, which may help to hide emotions, is important not only in the martial arts. The enumeration of abnormal feelings of fear (phobias) is enclosed.

Vladislav Kukačka, Ludvík Michalov: THE IMPORTANCE OF BREATH WHEN CORRECTING NEGATIVE SUBJECTIVE CONDITION BEFORE AND DURING AIKIDO EXAMINATIONS
Psychophysical exacting conditions, their origin and manifestations are described in the theoretical introduction. As the proper breathing may minimise these negative conditions, there are three simple calming breath techniques (each of them based on different approach) given in the end. Bibliography embraces 7 titles.

Practical instruction not only for the aikido practitioners, how to construct and apply Japanese numbers.

Bohumil Planka: TOSU - JAPANESE KNIVES
Shape, form and historical background of the small Japanese knife are described in the article, that is an illustration of the last issue NIHONTO magazine contents (No. 3, 1999) published annually by Nihonto Kenkyukai - department for sword studies of the Czech-Japanese Society, the activity of which is briefly mentioned in the introductory commentary.

Antonín Korb: KI AND SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI
Author's (a tea master's) philosophical reflection on Ki, love and sense of aikido based on a story about St. Francis of Assisi.

Radek Růžička: WHEN THE BODY SPEAKS
A reflection on the relation of techniques and body movements in aikido. As one practises aikido in couple, all training is about communication between the two men using movements instead of words. As to the author's experience the "hidden body speech" and the training itself may better help to solve man's problems than a number of techniques.

Miloš Novotný: JAPANESE NURSERY RHYMES
Humorous contribution revealing surprisingly Czech roots in the Japanese culture using 4 well-known Czech nursery rhymes in Japanese adaptations.
